It is very unusual for me to take vacation in the summer, which is ridiculous, since I have a school-aged child who gets nothing BUT vacation for two months.  However, when you own your own business, default staffing = you, so if staff take holidays, or there are big events happening, it’s just plain impossible to find time for a break.  After last year’s minimal camping, hubby threatened to take the children camping every weekend without me if I didn’t book some time off, which turned out to be just the kick in the butt I needed to book a week off after Billy Barker Days.

Oh…didn’t I tell you about Billy Barker Days?  I guess I didn’t, seeing as how I’ve been away from WordPress for more than a month (tsk, tsk!)  I teamed up with Amy Quarry at AdBoom Studio to enter into the BB Days Parade.  We built a float and practiced for two months with our stroller drill team, and managed to take first place in commercial float entry as well as first place for the drill team.  It was fun – hot, sweaty fun – and my son bailed out of the stroller before we even got to the end of the first block.  Good thing his sister was on the float; he sat with her for another block or so, and then wanted off of that, so he got to drive the truck which was towing the float with his dad.  I will ensure for any future parade entries that my entire family is somehow involved.  Here are a few key shots:

The float, sans kids

The strollers, with Skip Hop bags attached

The team, ready to roll

The team had matching Converse low tops and were virtually unrecognizable super-cool moms for the hour-long parade.  So fun.

And then the fun was over.  We cleaned up, got everything back to its’ rightful owners (thank you, Heath, for lending us a sound system – MC Hammer’s “Can’t Touch This” would not have worked from an iPod docking station), relaxed with a great dinner and got ready to leave for a week’s holidays.

…which I will tell you about in the next post!
